The UCW is a nationwide organization in the United Church whose purpose is to unite the women of the congregation for the total mission of the church involving fellowship, study and service. All women of the congregation are automatically members of the UCW and are most welcome to participate in meetings and events.

Southwood's UCW, led by President Marie Milne, has been active since the church started around 1964. We meet the first Tuesday, every second month at 7:00 pm from September to June. We usually have scrumptious Pot Luck Suppers together those months. Our meetings generally have some business component to organize and discuss the good works we do for our church and others. We also have fun activities, special speakers, and more. We have social events in the months when there are no meetings.

The UCW sponsors fund raising events to assist with the financing of the church. The main fundraiser is the Christmas Tea and Bazaar held in November. This special event in our church lives involves the whole congregation and raises around $5,000.00 each year. The women have a great time making crafts, baking and helping on the day of the big event, the men help with set up and serve in the tea room; and, members donate baking and crafts.

The UCW also participates in many other areas of the church, including serving refreshments after funerals.

CLOTHING SALE:
The U.C.W. is having a sale of gently used clothing September 22nd from 10am until 2pm. If anyone has any contributions it would be much appreciated. Please keep these items at home for now. If anyone has and left over material or some that you think you won't need and would like to donate to the U.C.W. or Sunday School, please leave it in room 8. We will include any that we can't use in our Clothing Sale in September. We will start collecting clothing for the sale the week of Sunday Sept 16 - Friday Sept 21 during office hours from 9am-1pm.

  • Creative Conversations: This group of women meet every Thursday morning to enjoy coffee, goodies and conversation. They spend time making crafts for the Tea & Bazaar; working together on projects, or making one on their own. Come and have great fun and get great ideas for your own personal crafts. If you just want conversation, this is the place for you. Twice a year we go out together for lunch, always choosing a different restaurant for the adventure. The 'Welcome Mat' is out at all times for anyone to join in the fun and fellowship.

  • Seniors (and Friends) Luncheon: The Seniors Luncheon is held monthly, usually on the 3rd Friday at Noon. Come early to enjoy pre-luncheon entertainment. Please call the church office at 253-2979 if you plan to attend by Wednesday, so the UCW can know how many to plan for. There is no charge but a free will offering is appreciated for expenses. There is usually from 40 to 50 people in attendance, with a number coming from the Austin Nixon Manor (next door). The food is always delicious with great fellowship.
